Treatment

Have you ever wondered if a neuromodulator treatment is the right fit for you?

Whether you’re considering your first treatment or you’re already a seasoned Botox patient, understanding how neuromodulators work and how they fit into an overall antiaging plan can help you make better decisions about your treatments.

Let’s break down some of the most common questions we hear in clinic.

What is a neuromodulator?

You may have heard the term neuromodulator, or you may simply know these treatments as “Botox.” Maybe you have wondered what a neuromodulator is or maybe you said “Botox, sign me up!”

Let’s start with the basics.

A neuromodulator is a substance that blocks the communication between the nerve and the muscle which stops the muscle from contracting.

Why does this matter for wrinkles?

Many of the lines we develop on our face begin as dynamic lines—lines created by repeated facial expressions such as smiling, squinting, frowning, or raising our eyebrows. Over time, repetitive muscle contraction combined with the natural decline in collagen and elastin can cause these lines to become more permanently etched into the skin (static lines).

By strategically relaxing certain muscles, neuromodulators can soften existing dynamic lines and help prevent them from becoming deeper over time.

In Canada, commonly used neuromodulators include Botox®, Dysport®, Xeomin®, and Nuceiva®. These products all use botulinum toxin type A, although their formulations and dosing are not identical.

What are neuromodulators used for?

Neuromodulators are most commonly used in the upper third of the face to treat:

  • Horizontal forehead lines
  • The “11s” or frown lines between the eyebrows
  • Crow’s feet

By reducing repetitive muscle contraction, these treatments can soften existing lines while also helping slow the development of deeper, more established wrinkles.

But neuromodulators can do much more than treat forehead lines.

They can also be strategically used throughout the lower face and neck. Depending on the individual, treatment may help with masseter hypertrophy and jawline slimming, jaw clenching and grinding, chin dimpling, a gummy smile, downturned corners of the mouth, and prominent neck bands.

When should I book my first treatment?

There is no perfect age to start neuromodulators.

Instead of choosing treatment based on age, we look at your facial anatomy, muscle strength, movement patterns, skin quality, genetics, and overall goals.

For someone beginning to notice dynamic lines that remain visible even when their face is relaxed (static lines), neuromodulators may help prevent those lines from becoming more deeply etched into the skin.

For someone else, improving collagen and skin quality with treatments such as microneedling, laser treatments, or other collagen-stimulating therapies may be a better place to start—or these treatments may be combined with neuromodulators.

This is why your first treatment should begin with a consultation rather than simply deciding how many “units” you want.

How much can I expect to spend?

There isn’t one standard number of units that works for everyone.

The amount required depends on several factors, including:

  • The strength and size of your facial muscles
  • The number of areas being treated
  • Your facial anatomy
  • Your treatment history
  • Your desired amount of movement
  • How your body responds to and metabolizes the product

Someone with stronger facial muscles or more established dynamic lines may require a different dose than someone starting earlier with subtle lines.

Your desired result matters as well.

Some patients prefer very little movement in a treated area, while others want a softer result that reduces lines while maintaining more natural facial movement. The goal should be an individualized treatment—not simply using the same number of units for every patient.

How often do I need to re-treat?

Neuromodulators generally last approximately 3–4 months, but that does not necessarily mean everyone needs treatment every three months.

Some patients choose to maintain their results consistently throughout the year, while others prefer treatments every six months or even once a year.

Your ideal treatment schedule depends on how quickly your muscle movement returns, how deeply your lines are established, your aesthetic goals, and how much maintenance you personally want.

Will neuromodulators make me look frozen?

This is one of the biggest concerns we hear—and it’s an important one.

Neuromodulator treatment does not have to mean a frozen or expressionless face.

The result depends heavily on the dose, placement, facial anatomy, and the goals discussed with your injector. A more conservative treatment can soften excessive movement while still allowing natural facial expression.

For many patients, the goal isn’t to look like they’ve had Botox. It’s simply to look rested, refreshed, and like themselves.

So, are neuromodulators right for you?

Neuromodulators can be an incredibly effective part of an anti-aging and skin-health plan, but they are only one tool.

Healthy aging is rarely about chasing every line or eliminating every sign of movement. Instead, we believe in looking at the face as a whole—considering muscle movement, collagen loss, skin quality, facial structure, and your individual goals before recommending treatment.

Sometimes neuromodulators are the best place to start. Other times, improving collagen and skin quality with regenerative treatments may make a bigger difference. And often, the best results come from thoughtfully combining approaches over time.

At Ae.R Skinlab, our goal is to create treatment plans that enhance your natural features while keeping you looking like yourself.

If you’re curious about neuromodulators but aren’t sure what treatment—or how much treatment—is right for you, book a consultation with us. We can assess your facial movement, skin quality, and goals and create an individualized plan that makes sense for you.
