It's one of the most fun times of the year, also known as the "spooky season".

This has been my favorite holiday as a kid and not much has changed when it comes to my love for Halloween as an adult. To keep everything on theme, I will be talking to you guys about the Vampire facial today. You may have heard about this after the viral Kim Kardashian photo that was released of her getting it done.

This was already a popular treatment that was offered at many clinics long before that moment. Today I will be letting you guys know why this is a treatment to consider, what to expect, and what you can do at home leading up to it to make it most effective.

Lets start off with what it is. PRP stands for Platelet-Rich Plasma. About 15 to 50 millilitres of the patients blood is collected and put in a centrifuge (device that spins at high speeds). The purpose of this is to physically separate the solid and liquid parts of the blood. Plasma carries water, salts and enzymes. The main role of plasma is to take nutrients, hormones, and proteins to the parts of the body that need it. Plasma is the liquid part of the blood, while platelets are the blood cells that exist within the plasma (a type of blood cell that plays an important role in healing throughout the body). Once the platelets are collected, they get reintegrated into the skin.

What does it do for your skin?

  • Collagen production boost. Collagen is the protein that makes our skin feel firm. This is why an increased level of collagen can help your skin look and feel younger, more hydrated and rejuvenated. PRP increases the natural formation of collagen in your skin, regenerates connective tissue, and increases skin thickness.
  • Firmer and tighter skin. This comes along with the increased collagen production. It can help to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, as well as give you younger-looking skin and fewer symptoms of aging.
  • Better moisture retention. It can help improve your skin’s moisture retention by unclogging and reducing the appearance of pores. Stronger and thicker skin means protection from outside irritants and ability to hold in moisture longer.
  • Improved skin texture. This can overall improve the skin texture, decrease pigmentation, and reduce the depth and severity of acne scars.

What can you do at home for this treatment to be more effective?

People don't often talk about the importance of the nutrients you take in. The more platelets you have, the better the results should be from your PRP treatment. Here's some of the things you should be having leading up to your treatment as well as the things to avoid.

Have more of:

  • B Vitamins
  • Iron
  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin D Vitamin K
  • Probiotics
  • 5-HTP
  • Chlorophyll

When it comes to your overall diet, have more wholesome foods with less sodium and sugar. This includes fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, legumes, and whole grains. Increase intake of leafy green vegetables that contain high amounts of vitamin K, calcium, and other minerals. Have more healthy fats such as olive oil. Choose organic foods that are not treated with pesticides, herbicides, or insecticides.

What to avoid:

  • Alcohol
  • Saturated fat
  • High-sodium foods
  • Artificial sweeteners

Try to avoid processed food as much as possible. Some other things to take into consideration are High glycemic index (GI) foods. These are foods made with refined grains or simple carbohydrates that increase blood sugar. High blood sugar can interfere with the clumping of platelets and increase the risk of bleeding. Certain fruits and vegetables can interfere with blood clotting that have an antioxidant calledquercetin. Even though a lot of these foods are considered healthy, it's best to avoid them one week prior to your PRP treatment. Minimize alcohol, caffeine, and cigarettes for 2 days before and after treatment.

I hope you found some useful information about the Vampire facial while reading this. This is a great way to rejuvenate your skin and reverse the signs of aging. It's a good reminder to think twice about what you are consuming as well! This facial is currently on special from October 23 - November 4th for $658 (reg. $835).
